What is tocopherol?
Tocopherol is one of the compounds that make up vitamin E. Its name comes from Greek words for 'birth' and 'to carry'; it was discovered in 1936 as a fertility factor in rats. It occurs naturally in plant oils. In Europe the main sources are olive and sunflower oil; in the US, soybean and corn oil.
Where it appears in cosmetics
On labels it can appear as tocopherol, tocopheryl acetate, tocopheryl succinate and other forms. It serves as vitamin E in skincare products. Lists of ingredients to avoid in cosmetics do not include tocopherol.
What the safety data says
Acute toxicity is very low; lethal doses in laboratory animals are at the gram level. Most skin and eye irritation studies report no significant irritation. One record places it in a skin irritation category, so the data is not entirely unanimous. The likelihood of skin sensitization appears low.
Is it controversial?
There is no widespread safety claim against tocopherol. It does not appear on lists of harmful ingredients. It is not a controversial substance; current data regards it as safe.
