What Is Cocamidopropyl Betaine in Shampoos, and Why Is It Called an Allergen?

You have probably seen cocamidopropyl betaine on a label. The long name looks intimidating, but it is a common cleanser in shampoos, face washes, and body washes.

What it is and where you'll find it

Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) is a synthetic cleanser made from fatty acids in coconut oil. It has been used since the 1950s. It appears in baby shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, and some oral care products. The 'betaine' in its name is not the same as betaine from beets; that ingredient is not used to make it.

What it does

Its main job is to act as a surfactant: it helps water mix with oil so dirt and grease can be rinsed away. On its own it is not a deep cleanser, but it makes other cleansers work better. It boosts lather, thickens the product, and reduces the drying effect of harsher detergents. It is considered milder than sodium lauryl sulfate.

Why there is a debate

The concern is not the molecule itself but two impurities that can remain after production: DMAPA and amidoamine. These can trigger allergic contact eczema. That is why the American Contact Dermatitis Society named CAPB its Allergen of the Year in 2004. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel concluded that CAPB is safe in cosmetics when formulated so that it does not cause sensitization. Skin and eye irritation records show mixed categories, which suggests the final product matters more than the raw ingredient.

The CIR panel considers CAPB and related betaines safe when formulated to be nonsensitizing, and UK and EU authorities describe it as safe for use in cosmetics.

Most people use CAPB without problems. If your skin is sensitive or your shampoo leaves your scalp red and itchy, try a cleanser with a shorter ingredient list. Broken skin or eczema can make irritation worse; see a dermatologist in that case. Coco betaine is a different ingredient, and while it is marketed as more natural, it still needs its own evaluation.
