Stearic acid: Why is it so common in creams?

When you pick up a moisturizer or sunscreen, you'll likely see stearic acid on the ingredient list. The word acid can sound alarming at first. But it's a fatty acid naturally found in animal and vegetable fats.

What is stearic acid?

Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid. It's a yellowish-white, waxy solid at room temperature. It's obtained from vegetable oils like palm or soybean oil, or from animal fats. That's why it shows up often in soaps, creams, and lotions.

What does it do?

It has several jobs in cosmetics. It softens the skin and helps lock in moisture. It also stabilizes emulsions by keeping oil and water from separating. It thickens creams and binds ingredients together. In short, it gives products a smooth and stable texture.

What do lab findings say?

In an EPA cell culture screening, stearic acid was seen to potentially activate the estrogen receptor. But this is a preliminary test; it doesn't account for skin absorption or real exposure levels. So it doesn't mean it produces estrogen-like effects in humans at cosmetic use levels. In EPA's irritation records, no significant skin or eye irritation was seen in rabbits. These two findings complement each other: there's no clear signal for concern.

What do regulators say?

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) panel has published a safety assessment for stearic acid and similar fatty acids. In Europe, chemicals are evaluated under the REACH regulation. In the available records, stearic acid doesn't appear as a restricted substance in cosmetics.
