Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer: Where does the gel texture come from?

Arin Editorial · how this is made

Face Powder

When you see it in the ingredient list of a moisturizer, the question 'what is this?' comes to mind. Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer is a polymer that adjusts the product's texture; it doesn't promise a lasting effect on skin.

What is this ingredient?

It is a large network formed by crosslinking small molecules like acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. This structure holds water and creates a gel-like consistency. It is also known commercially as Carbopol 1342.

What does it do?

It has three main roles: it thickens, stabilizes emulsions, and forms a film. It controls the flow of gels, prevents oil and water from separating in lotions, and creates an even layer on the skin in sunscreens. You'll find it in creams, serums, sunscreens, eyeliners, and brow gels.

Does it affect the skin?

Because the polymer is a large molecule, it stays on the skin surface and doesn't penetrate. Acrylate monomers can be irritating on their own, but after polymerization they are trapped inside the chain. Trace amounts of residual acrylic acid are kept below irritation thresholds. Current data shows no signal for cancer, hormone disruption, or reproductive toxicity.

The acrylate allergy worry

The 'acrylate allergy' concern circulating online mostly comes from small monomers used in nail enhancements. This polymer, however, is too large to penetrate the skin, and the risk of contact allergy is reported to be low. Individual sensitivities can still occur, as with any ingredient.

In the European Union, no specific concentration limit or ban exists for this ingredient; no limit is defined for the acrylate copolymer family either, including sodium acrylates copolymer.

You don't need to avoid it. If you have a known acrylate sensitivity, test a new product on a small area of your inner arm first. Otherwise, this ingredient is an innocent helper that adjusts texture.
